2020 International Women's Day
Back in 2014 when I dared myself to be brave enough to visualise what kind of brand I would like to build, I knew that I wanted to build a brand For Women by Women.
My starting point was what kind of place would I like to work, what kind of people would I like to work with, all of which amounts to what kind of culture did I want to create.
So I started at the beginning, my beginning and the family values I was brought up with, and the exponents of those values. This is best exemplified by the strong women I was surrounded with as I was growing up, my Mama, my Mum and my 4 amazing Aunties (check out the bee-hives!). These women showered me with love, nurture and laughter, enabling me to grow up with a strong sense of curiosity, equality and I guess, drive.
That is the culture I wanted for Hope, somewhere you could balance a family with a career, somewhere you could feel safe, confident and valued.
I’ve had some great opportunities in my career, some to do with luck, mostly to do with hard work and grit determination, so I wanted to be able to offer similar opportunities to young women looking for a break into the fashion industry. In other words, giving some of the success I’ve had onto the next generation.
Today we are largely an all-female team ranging in age from 21 to 62, some starting their careers fresh from college to those who have a wealth of experience but still have a thriving passion for what they do. To date we have ‘turned out’ 3 great girls, Libby, Danni and now Claire who having spent on average of two years with us have left to continue their careers in London or exploring the world.
One of our best examples of working together to achieve a big audacious goal was the relocation of our warehouse to our office premises last summer, with the addition of Token Bloke Tony, we did it!
From unloading the lorry, learning how to use a pallet truck, working out how to organise 2000 units of product into a logical order, we made it happen. We had a slight wobble when we didn’t think it was all going to fit, but we worked it out! Even my wonderful Mum and Mum in Law got stuck in...no one was afraid to roll their sleeves up.
So, on this 2020 International Women’s Day we’re not offering a discount or a free T-Shirt, but instead reflecting on why we’re here, an ordinary group of women wanting to make our extraordinary customers feel empowered and beautifully confident.
Thank you as always for your support, Happy International Women’s Day!
