Made in Britain
Proud to be British
I believe that women today increasingly care about where their clothes are made, even if they have embraced the idea of disposable fashion in the past. That’s why at Hope we made the decision right at the start that wherever possible our collection would be made in Britain. It was a challenge – there aren’t that many factories left and it is more expensive to manufacture here rather than abroad. But after a great deal of time and effort I’m proud to say that we now work with a handful of small, privately owned, often family-run businesses around the country that specialise in manufacturing our beautiful fabrics and garments.
Founder and CEO
Made in Britain: ethics, quality and control
We work with six, small manufacturing partners in the UK, all of which are specialists in their particular field. We are able to develop close working relationships with everyone involved in the production process. This gives us real flexibility and hands on control of our lead times and repeats. At the same time we have sourced British fabric mills and spinners so we can proudly say that in some cases both the fabric and the garment are “Made in Britain”! Jaquine, our Product Developer, has worked in the industry for 30 years. She is focussed on working with our new UK partners to develop the very best quality pieces for the Hope collection. “We are a new brand and our manufacturers have supported us from day one in our mission to “make in Britain”.
Behind the Label
Our finest cashmere, cotton ponchos are hand framed in Wales by a family run company established in1892. We are very proud to be a part of this heritage thanks to a special relationship with the great grand children who now run this unique knitwear business. Our gorgeous ponchos owe their feather light handle to soft Welsh water finishing and quality cashmere and cashmere cotton supplied by the finest Scottish spinners. In contrast we are knitting light Summer yarns on state of the art “seamless” machinery, like our exquisite butterfly cocoon knit made in Hinckley. Silk is another luxury fabric we have UK sourced. We are making a washed silk relaxed pant with our manufacturing partners in London and a show stopping silk pop on dress in Sheffield. In addition to our best selling narrow stretch ponte trousers made in the UK, we have developed a new cotton stretch pant in navy and chalk which is designed to sit just above the ankle. These beautiful, easy to wear ankle grazers are also made in London.
Meet Jean, a very important member of the Hope team who brings to us 40+ years of experience in design, tailoring and garment technology. Previously Head of Technology at one of the high street’s most famous brands, Jean scours the country to source the best fabrics and manufacturers and oversees the production process from conception through to the finished garment. “I look for small companies that specialise in dealing with a particular fabric. When you are designing with silk, chiffon and jersey it’s so important to find machinists that know how to work with the fabric. I select companies with a nice, clean and tidy workspace, ethical standards, a motivated workforce and rates of pay that provide their workers with a good standard of living.” Jean is wearing the Asymmetric knit, proudly made in Hinckley!
