New Years Resolutions or All-Year-Round Self Care?

I feel very fortunate to have been involved in Hope since day one, it was Nayna’s vision for the culture of the brand that was as important as the style of the collection. The importance of team and feminine leadership values was always essential, so to that end, at around 1.00pm every day, we down tools to prepare and eat lunch together at the office kitchen table (or more like Nayna’s kitchen table!). This gives us a chance for quality conversation rather than snatched conversations in between trying to eat a sandwich at the desk and type an email... we’ve all done it!
It was at one of our lunches this week that we got to talking about how we all glaze over at yet another article or post on New Year resolutions, getting fit, eating clean and so on. Why is it at this time of year we feel so bombarded and under pressure to feel perfect? All we have done is had a wonderful Christmas and New Year celebrating with family and friends.
Personally, I never do New Year’s resolutions, I prefer to take stock of my life and do a ‘life audit’, a kind of January re-set: what’s going well, what not so well, and focus on plans for the year. In my 47th year, I truly believe it’s more about ‘self-care’ than anything else. For me, it was my mid-thirties when I started to realise the importance of looking after yourself and fell in love with the gym to combat my very sweet tooth! Having two dogs means I’ve always got to get out and walk, no matter what the weather, but there’s nothing like cardio to give you that wonderful post workout feeling. Then having our son in my late thirties very much focused the mind that, with so many other health risks, you need to do anything you can to look after yourself in order to be a parent for as long as possible, so it was time to re-set.
So, my top tips to you if you are feeling lack-lustre and need a confidence boost this January....
- Be kind to yourself
- Take it one step at a time, introducing one small goal a day
- Focus on the things that make you happy
- Go outside once a day, if not for a walk just to stand and breathe in the fresh air
- When things get very stressful, breathe in for 3 seconds, hold, then out for 4
- And finally, smile, it makes you feel better!
