Shout out to my She-roes

“How important it is to recognise and celebrate our heroes and she-roes

Maya Angelou

After a hectic week here at the Home of Hope, shooting our new Summer collection which launches in April, and with Mother’s Day just a week away I wanted to recognise and celebrate two of my she-roes.

Once again we were together with a lovely group of friends and customers all eager to try on the new range, beautifully crafted in silks, chiffon and ramie cotton. Everyone seemed to love the new vibrant coral and aqua colours as they didn’t want to put them back on the rail after their camera moment!

As you can imagine, the shoot is very busy when you add in a photographer, make-up artists and a hairdresser and typically there are 20 or so people involved from 8am until late pm. Behind the scenes as always were two wonderful women who are the energy behind the brand: my Mum, Meikle and Mum-in-Law, Pauline. Collectively known as the Golden Girls these she-roes fed and watered the team all day long with their wonderful home cooking.

They have also played defining roles in the development of Hope and provided the inspiration for two of the most important parts of any brand, a name and an identity.

Me and Mum Me and Mum

It goes without saying that my Mum has been there from the start - 55 years in fact and still counting! With a great sense of style and a model of authenticity, clear about what she stands for and fiercely independent. Instilling in me core values of integrity, honesty and a strong sense of family.

Hope also happens to be Mum’s middle name and it’s a name I have chosen to pass on to my daughter too.

Mum has always been my inspiration so when I named the brand ‘Hope’ it was an acknowledgment of those values and of the faith and love she has bestowed on me.

Having decided on a name, I now needed a logo and for that I have to acknowledge Pauline’s role. Coincidentally, Pauline and my very dear father-in-law, Tony were living with us as they had sold their house and were looking for somewhere new to live. Tony was a very experienced graphic designer running his own studio for over 40 years with a real eye for the creative as well as the detail.

Naturally, Tony was the only person I wanted to design my logo although he was very very poorly. So with some hesitation I turned to Pauline to see if she thought Tony would have the energy and creative stimulus to do this. She immediately said yes!

Propped up in bed, Tony took my brief and set straight to work putting down his newspaper and summoning Pauline for help. They worked on it together and in a matter of days the initial design was pitched to me. Suffice to say I loved it - and they loved that I loved it. There were a lot of tears!

Sadly, Hope was Tony’s final commission so I will always be extremely grateful to Pauline for playing such an instrumental part in visually bringing to life the Hope brand.

So this Mother’s Day whether it be with your Mum, your children or simply enjoying some peace and quiet, please have a wonderful day and maybe take a moment to acknowledge your she-roes whoever they may be.

Until next time,

  • Have recently found your brand and love it.bought the boxy too in grey mail and was wondering if you had ant plans in making it in more colours or beige

    • Hi Lorna, delighted to hear that you love the boxy top. we don't have any current plans to repeat in more colours this season but we will be introducing a gorgeous navy foundation jacket at the beginning of April. It is a similar length, has a full zip through and pockets so is super flattering. Hope this helps, Nayna X

  • I'm a new customer and really love the clothes, but more than that I love buying from a company that embraces a true family ethic and love. Xxxx

    • Thank you Alexandra! One of my favourite quotes comes from the late great Bob Marley, “love the life you live.
live the life you love.” because love is all that really matters in the end! Have a great weekend, Nayna X

  • Nayna, it is lovely to hear how your family have been involved in Hope. Having a son who is an MDes I can appreciate the work that went into the creation of your logo! Think of your father-in-law and your gorgeous 'She-roes' each time you look at the logo....and all the love behind it ?
P.S. I'm loving the black foundation body and grey kimono.....worn a lot since their arrival !

  • Thank you Nayna for rushing the white ankle grazers to me
for my travels to India. I am wearing them through out my
trip. They fit well, are comfortable, lovely fabric which retains its shape and they wash well. Will need to buy more on my return!!
