The Life of a Hope Cashmere Poncho

I believe that women today increasingly care about where their clothes are made, even if they have embraced the idea of disposable fashion in the past. That’s why at Hope we made the decision right at the start that wherever possible our collection would be made in Britain. It was a challenge – there aren’t that many factories left and it is more expensive to manufacture here rather than abroad. But after a great deal of time and effort I’m proud to say that we now work with a handful of small, privately owned, often family-run businesses around the country that specialise in manufacturing our beautiful fabrics and garments.

I'd like to show you how our garments come to life, using the Cashmere Cotton Poncho as an example, let's call it a day in the life of!

It all starts in South Oxfordshire where we are based and Garry, our designer, sketches out the initial design and  specification for every garment including colour and yarn suggestions.

Jaquine, our product developer, then sources the very best quality yarn and colours. At Hope we use one of the worlds leading cashmere yarn spinners with over 140 years heritage. Todd and Duncan combine the finest quality cashmere fibre with the purity of Scottish water to create the worlds finest cashmere yarn.

The cashmere yarn then makes its way to a family run company in south Wales called Corgi. Corgi was established in 1892 and was awarded a Royal Warrant by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1989, we are very proud to be a part of this heritage. Our finest Cashmere Cotton Ponchos are hand framed and owe their feather light handle to soft Welsh water finishing.

Once knitted the ponchos come back to us to be checked by Jeannie, our garment technologist, who will ensure they have been made exactly to the design specification. Only when Jeannie has given them the green light are they sent to our warehouse and onto the website for our customers to buy!

So here you have the journey of the Cashmere Cotton Poncho, from Oxfordshire, to Scotland, to Wales back to Oxfordshire and finally to you, wherever that may be!

If you would like to see more about how these ponchos have been made in Wales please take a look at our Made in Britain film, shot on location in south Wales, enjoy!! And finally a huge Thank You to Lisa, Chris and all the team at Corgi for doing such a marvellous job for us!

  • I love the idea of the Poncho but would it fit a large lady? 30/32?

    • Dear Jacqueline,

Thank you for your reply, it truly is a beautiful poncho. Our pure cashmere ponchos at £250 are slightly larger than the cotton/cashmere mix ones at £195. At this price you would get free delivery and we always offer free returns, so I would suggest you order one so you can try it on?
